In her later years, Conchita, Marta’s grandmother, would recall with particular fondness her childhood in Larache, a fishing town south of Tangier. She spoke of harira, a soup her granddaughter never had the chance to taste in that house. The anecdote might have remained there, but Marta chose to follow the thread, extending the conversation into a universe of characters as fictional as they are recognisable.
Shifting between past and present, the novel traces intersecting lives across Zaragoza, the rural world, and the memory of Morocco. Piel de garbanzo explores family, identity, secrets, and ways of being in the world. It does so through a sharp, everyday lens, placing the kitchen at the heart of the narrative.
